Platonic Forms :: essays research papers

One Example of a Platonic plaster cast other than what the book suggests is the Form of a book. The idea to write this paper on the Form of book came to me while I was sitting in the library perusing the reference books, trying to go down on an answer to question 2. You could say that the answer was staring me right in the face.     I believe that the Form of a book exists but I have to agree with Aristotles idea that the Form is created when the object is created. I also think that Forms are eternal, but from the moment that they are first thought of and and so brought into the physical world.      At one point in time someone decided to put information unitedly in the form of words pen on pages put between two bindings. Before the first person who thought of and created this "book", I believe one must ask themselves if the Form existed. How could a Form exist if the object didnt yet exist? A Form for a thing such as a book exist s at one time the object is created because it is a new idea. Therefore, everything inscribes in a Form because everything tangible exists.     The idea of a perfect book can exist only in our minds through thought. Since books range in topic and in content , what might be the topic and content of this perfect book? A book contains ideas, characters, etc., so would the Form of a book then contain perfect ideas, characters, etc.?     To define what a book is is to define what the Form must be a perfect version(idea) of. My philosophy textbook differs very much from a childrens book such as "Where The Wild Things Are", but they both still participate in the Form of a book, being that the Form of a book only dictates the shape and not the content. It is when the thought of a book is represented in the physical world that content and topic come into play.      Suppose that I make photocopies of every page out of " Where The Wild Things Are", and staple them together at the corner. We could still call that stapled together group of papers the book "Where The Wild Things Are", yet could we still state that it participates in the Form since it doesnt guess like a book? This is where are senses deceive us.

Handheld Mobile Devices Essay -- Technology

Research has shown that use of hand held mobile phones while driving fucking increase the risk of crash by up to 23 times (Vic Roads, 2009). In an attempt to curb the number of people taking such risks, TAC launched a campaign to bring awareness to the problem of distrait drivers, many of whom are distracted by hand held mobile phones, commonly used to talk or text while driving. Considering the statistics regarding the chance of crash when pursue in such activities and the prevalence of the problem, TAC has launched the campaign with hope of creating locating change. The TAC advert, witnessed by participants of this study, shows various situations of distracted drivers. Two situations of specific relevance to this study, talking on a hand held mobile and texting whilst driving. In all occasions the danger is present, in the final situation the danger is realised via the crash. Attitude can be specify as a set of beliefs, feelings, behavioural tendencies and evaluat ions, that are mostly enduring, and are positive or negative in nature, regarding some person, group, object, issue, event or type (Vaughan and Hogg, 2011). This reveals the problematic nature of any attempt to use persuasion to force attitude change. While enduring, resilient attitudes are unlikely to be easily altered, it is not impossible to do so. A dual process theory was proposed by Petty and Cacioppo (1981), the Elaboration Likelihood Model in which, attitude change can occur via two processes. The Elaboration Likelihood Model postulates two processing routes of persuasion, the Central Route, and the Peripheral Route. The former refers to more careful thought utilising more cognitive resources, while the latter, less motivated, less car... ...erely the hand held mobile. It has been speculated that laws pertaining to banning of mobiles whilst driving should include hands free mobiles. Future research should utilise this information and perhaps taproom attitudes regardin g all phone use whilst driving rather than only hand held phone use. This study has utilised the two processes of elaboration set out in the Elaboration Likelihood Model, to measure the success of the TAC campaign, in changing attitudes of favourability towards the dangerous practice of using a hand held mobile whilst driving. The results of the study show that attitude change is possible via both Central and Peripheral Route processing, as measured before and after viewing the TAC advertisement. Central Route processing has a clear advantage and was significantly more effective than Peripheral Route processing in attitude change.

The Dangers of Objectification :: Philosophy essays

The Dangers of Objectification   Consider for a moment the course typically taken in a class interchange. A person states that he is an swellhead, or a relativist, or an absolutist. These various terms are used to classify an several(prenominal) according to his moral philosophy. Nietzsche has an important objection to these simplistic commentarys. Shall we still speak this way today? May we do so? (Nietzsche 463) There are difficulties in this simplistic approach to classifying an individual. The first is that an individual is not so easily crammed into a verbal box. Sartre would regularise that this is a way of objectifying the person under consideration. To say that I am an egoist, or that another student is an altruist, is to imply that egoism or altruism is the essential nature of the person, and that other considerations fade into the background and bend unimportant under this veil of the persons ethical philosophy. It is to equate me with egoism, or to equate th e other student with relativism.   But I am more than Bob the egoist I am also Bob the philosopher, I am Bob the student, I am Bob the coffee drinker. The name Bob points to a definition that is, of necessity, abbreviated. When a stranger asks me who I am, it is not possible for me to provide a complete description. But when I describe a few opinions, actions, and relationships, I do so hoping that she may view me beyond the narrow limits imposed by what I can tell her quickly.   It may be convenient to say, But for this discussion we consider only your ethical theory. But besides objectifying the individual, this is overly simplistic because it ignores the subtle shades of meaning which exist among these philosophies. I think of myself as an egoist because I believe that the very nature of an individual grants him certain rights and that these rights do not include claims on the rights of another. But to say that I am an egoist is to imply that I agree, completely or mos tly, with the ethical theories of Hobbes, Rand, and every other egoist who has ever philosophized--none of which is overwhelmingly true, since I differ with all of the egoists I am acquainted with. For example, the popular conception of egoism implies that I think it is morally acceptable to perform any action to achieve my ends, regardless of the effect on others.
